Preheat your oven to 400F, once heated turn the oven off. Place the dried calendula flowers and coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl and put into the oven. This method ensures gentle heat, preventing the oil from overheating and preserving the beneficial properties of the calendula.
Allow the mixture to gently heat for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally to ensure even infusion. This slow process helps extract the maximum healing properties from the calendula flowers.
After the oil has been sufficiently infused, strain out the calendula flowers using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Make sure to squeeze out as much oil as possible from the flowers to utilize every bit of the infused goodness.
Pour the strained oil into a clean, dry jar. This calendula-infused coconut oil can be used as a base for various skincare products, including a salve.
In a double boiler, melt the beeswax over low heat. Beeswax acts as a natural thickener and provides a protective barrier on the skin.
Once the beeswax is fully melted, add the calendula-infused coconut oil. Stir until the mixture is completely combined and smooth.
If using essential oils, add them now. Stir well to distribute the oils evenly throughout the mixture.
Pour and Cool: Carefully pour the hot mixture into tins or glass jars. Allow it to cool and solidify at room temperature before sealing.
Your homemade calendula salve is now ready to use!
