DIY Calendula Salve Recipe: Nature’s Healing Balm

Calendula salve is a versatile and soothing ointment that harnesses the natural healing properties of calendula flowers. This simple DIY recipe using calendula-infused coconut oil and beeswax will guide you in creating a gentle, multi-purpose salve perfect for the whole family. In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of calendula, provide a detailed recipe, and delve into how this salve can be used as a diaper rash cream that’s safe and gentle for your baby’s delicate skin.

Calendula Salve Benefits

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as pot marigold, has been used for centuries in herbal medicine for its numerous therapeutic properties. These bright yellow-orange flowers are packed with potent compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and triterpenoids, which contribute to their impressive anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Here are some key benefits of calendula:

  1. Anti-inflammatory: Reduces swelling and soothes irritated skin.
  2. Antiseptic: Prevents infection in minor cuts and wounds.
  3. Healing: Accelerates the repair of skin tissue.
  4. Moisturizing: Provides hydration to dry or damaged skin.

Given these benefits, calendula is an ideal ingredient for a homemade salve that can address a variety of skin concerns.

Ingredients

To create your calendula salve, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  1. Calendula-Infused Coconut Oil:
  2. Beeswax:
    • 1 ounce beeswax (approx. 2 tablespoons)

Optional Add-Ins

  • Essential Oils: For additional scent or therapeutic benefits, you can add a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, or chamomile.

Instructions

Step 1: Making Calendula-Infused Coconut Oil

  1. Combine and Heat: Preheat your oven to 400F, once heated turn the oven off. Place the dried calendula flowers and coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl and put into the oven. This method ensures gentle heat, preventing the oil from overheating and preserving the beneficial properties of the calendula.
  2. Infuse: Allow the mixture to gently heat for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally to ensure even infusion. This slow process helps extract the maximum healing properties from the calendula flowers.
  3. Strain: After the oil has been sufficiently infused, strain out the calendula flowers using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Make sure to squeeze out as much oil as possible from the flowers to utilize every bit of the infused goodness.
  4. Store: Pour the strained oil into a clean, dry jar. This calendula-infused coconut oil can be used as a base for various skincare products, including a salve.

Step 2: Making the Salve

  1. Melt the Beeswax: In a double boiler, melt the beeswax over low heat. Beeswax acts as a natural thickener and provides a protective barrier on the skin.
  2. Add Infused Oil: Once the beeswax is fully melted, add the calendula-infused coconut oil. Stir until the mixture is completely combined and smooth.
  3. Optional Add-Ins: If using essential oils, add them now. Stir well to distribute the oils evenly throughout the mixture.
  4. Pour and Cool: Carefully pour the hot mixture into tins or glass jars. Allow it to cool and solidify at room temperature before sealing.

Your homemade calendula salve is now ready to use!

Using Calendula Salve as a Diaper Rash Cream

Gentle and Effective for Baby’s Skin

One of the standout uses for calendula salve is as a diaper rash cream. Here’s why it’s perfect for your baby:

  1. Natural Ingredients: Calendula and coconut oil are natural and gentle, avoiding the harsh chemicals found in many commercial diaper rash creams.
  2. Healing Properties: Calendula’s anti-inflammatory and healing properties help soothe and repair irritated skin quickly.
  3. Moisturizing: Coconut oil is highly moisturizing, creating a protective barrier on the skin that helps prevent further irritation.
  4. Safe for Sensitive Skin: This salve is free from synthetic fragrances and dyes, making it suitable for the most sensitive skin.

How to Use

  • Clean and Dry: Ensure your baby’s diaper area is clean and dry before application. Use a gentle, unscented baby wipe or warm water with a soft cloth.
  • Apply Salve: Take a small amount of the calendula salve and gently apply it to the affected area. A thin layer is sufficient. The salve will create a barrier that protects the skin from moisture and friction.
  • Frequent Application: Use the salve with each diaper change to protect and heal your baby’s skin. It can also be used preventatively to keep diaper rash at bay.

Why Choose Calendula Salve Over Commercial Diaper Creams?

  • Chemical-Free: Many commercial diaper creams contain synthetic ingredients and preservatives that can irritate sensitive skin. Calendula salve is all-natural and free from harmful chemicals.
  • Cost-Effective: Making your own salve can be more economical in the long run, especially when you consider the high price of many organic diaper creams.
  • Customizable: You have full control over the ingredients, allowing you to tailor the salve to your baby’s specific needs.

Other Uses for Calendula Salve

Beyond diaper rash, this versatile salve can be used for:

  • Minor Cuts and Scrapes: The antiseptic properties of calendula help clean wounds, while its anti-inflammatory action reduces swelling and promotes healing.
  • Eczema: Provides relief from the itching and inflammation associated with eczema. Regular application can help manage flare-ups and keep skin moisturized.
  • Dry Skin: Acts as a powerful moisturizer for dry or cracked skin, particularly on hands, feet, and elbows.
  • Chapped Lips: Can be used as a natural lip balm, providing hydration and healing for dry, chapped lips.
  • Burns and Sunburns: The soothing properties of calendula help reduce pain and inflammation from burns and sunburns, promoting faster healing.

Storage and Shelf Life

To ensure your calendula salve remains effective, store it in a cool, dark place. A tightly sealed container will help preserve its freshness. Typically, homemade salves can last up to a year if stored properly. If you notice any changes in smell or texture, it’s best to discard and make a fresh batch.

Creating your own calendula salve is a rewarding and straightforward process that allows you to harness the healing power of nature. This all-purpose salve is a must-have in any natural skincare routine, especially for parents looking for a gentle and effective diaper rash cream. By using pure, natural ingredients, you can provide the best care for your skin and your baby’s, all while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly what’s in your skincare products. With a handful of simple ingredients and a bit of time, you can create a batch of heavenly Same Day Sourdough Dinner Rolls that will elevate any meal. Join us on this culinary journey as we dive into the art of sourdough baking and discover the magic of freshly baked bread in just a few hours.

Gather Your Ingredients

Step 1: Let’s start by rounding up the essentials for our sourdough dinner rolls:

Sourdough Dinner Rolls in a few hours!

Step 2: Prepare Your Sourdough Starter – A thriving sourdough starter is the heartbeat of any sourdough recipe. If your starter has been resting in the fridge, it’s time to awaken its dormant yeasts and bacteria. Begin by removing your starter from the refrigerator and allowing it to come to room temperature. Once it’s ready, give it a hearty feeding with equal parts flour and water, stirring until it’s lively and bubbling with activity. (This should be done the night before baking).

Step 3: Heat a small sauce pan on the stove and add in your butter. Allow the butter to melt completely before taking it off the heat and adding in your cold milk. This will bring the butter temperature down so it will not scold and kill the sourdough starter in your dough. Once the milk and butter mixture is warm but not hot, add it into your stand mixer along with the remaining ingredients.

Step 4: Knead the Dough – Turn your stand mixer on low and get ready to embark on a transformative journey through kneading. Let the dough to knead for a duration of 5 to 7 minutes, allowing its structure to strengthen and its texture to evolve into a supple, elastic marvel.

Step 5: Let it Rise – Leave your kneaded dough in its cozy bowl abode, covering it with a clean kitchen towel to shield it from the outside world. Give it ample time to rest and rise, about 3-4 hours in a warm place (I always turn my oven light on and set the dough in there).

Step 6: Shape Your Rolls – As your dough swells with life, gently coax it onto your countertop, ready to be shaped into individual rolls. With practiced hands, divide the dough into 9 equal portions, each destined to become a fluffy masterpiece. Roll, tuck, and pinch until each piece forms a smooth orb of potential, arranging them with care on a parchment-lined or greased baking pan.

Step 7: Let Them Rise Again – Cover your shaped rolls with a veil of patience, granting them another opportunity to rise and expand. Under the watchful eye of your kitchen towel guardian, allow the rolls to bask in the warmth of anticipation for an additional 2 to 3 hours, until they swell with pride, eager to greet the oven’s embrace.

Step 8: Bake to Perfection – Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C), the stage set for the grand finale of your sourdough symphony. Slide the baking pan into the preheated oven, where the alchemy of heat and time will transform your humble dough into golden-brown wonders. After 25 to 30 minutes of patient waiting, the rolls emerge, fragrant and triumphant, ready to grace your table with their warm, inviting presence. With a tender brushstroke, anoint the risen rolls with a coat of melted butter, bestowing upon them a golden crown of indulgence.

Step 9: Enjoy! With bated breath and eager hands, transfer the freshly baked rolls to a waiting platter, their golden exteriors whispering promises of tender crumb within. Gather loved ones around the table, their anticipation mirrored in your own, as you break bread together, savoring the fruits of your labor. Whether paired with a hearty stew, adorned with a dollop of butter, or savored on their own, these Same Day Sourdough Dinner Rolls are a testament to the joy of homemade baking, a reminder that with a little time and ingenuity, culinary magic is always within reach.

Tooth Powder Recipe

In the quest for healthier living and a more sustainable lifestyle, it’s only natural to scrutinize the products we use daily, including those for oral care. Conventional toothpaste often contains a laundry list of synthetic ingredients, from artificial sweeteners to preservatives, which can leave us wondering about their long-term effects on our health and the environment. But fear not, as there’s a natural alternative that not only promotes dental health but also reduces our environmental footprint: homemade tooth powder.

Today, we’ll delve into a simple yet effective tooth powder recipe crafted from natural ingredients that you may already have in your pantry. This concoction combines the cleansing power of bentonite clay, the abrasiveness of baking soda, and the antimicrobial properties of spices like clove and cinnamon. Let’s dive into the recipe:

Homemade Tooth Powder

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Gather all the ingredients listed above. Ensure that your utensils and containers are clean and dry before you begin.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, add the bentonite clay, baking soda, salt, ground cloves, and ground cinnamon. Use a whisk or spoon to thoroughly combine the dry ingredients. This ensures an even distribution of each component in the tooth powder, the mixture should have a uniform texture and color.
  3. Transfer to a Container: Once mixed, transfer the tooth powder into a clean, airtight container. A small jar or tin works well for storage.
  4. Usage Instructions: To use the tooth powder, simply wet your toothbrush, dip it into the powder, and brush your teeth as usual. Alternatively, you can sprinkle a small amount of powder onto a wet toothbrush. Brush your teeth gently for about two minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.
Tooth Powder DIY

Why These Ingredients?

  • Bentonite Clay: Known for its detoxifying properties, bentonite clay helps remove toxins and impurities from the teeth and gums while providing essential minerals.
  • Baking Soda: This common household ingredient acts as a mild abrasive, aiding in the removal of plaque and surface stains without causing damage to tooth enamel. It is important to use an aluminum-free baking soda, I like the Bob’s Red Mill Brand.
  • Salt: Salt helps to cleanse and disinfect the mouth, while also providing a gentle abrasive action for thorough cleaning.
  • Ground Cloves: Cloves are renowned for their antibacterial and analgesic properties, which can help alleviate toothaches and combat oral bacteria.
  • Ground Cinnamon: Cinnamon not only adds a pleasant flavor to the tooth powder but also possesses antimicrobial properties that can help fight bacteria responsible for bad breath and tooth decay.

The Downside of Conventional Toothpaste:

Conventional toothpaste has long been a staple in our daily hygiene routines, promising to keep our smiles bright and our mouths healthy. However, a closer look at the ingredients list reveals a different story. Many commercial toothpaste brands contain a plethora of synthetic chemicals and additives, some of which have raised concerns about their potential health risks.

Artificial sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame are often added to toothpaste to improve taste, but studies have shown that they can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the mouth and may even contribute to insulin resistance and metabolic disorders. *not medical advice

Preservatives such as parabens and triclosan are another cause for concern. These chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance, raising questions about their long-term safety, particularly with regular use over time.

How to Make Tooth Powder

The Costly Alternative:

While some consumers may opt for natural or organic toothpaste as a safer alternative to conventional brands, they often come with a hefty price tag. Store-bought natural toothpaste can be significantly more expensive than their conventional counterparts, making them inaccessible to many budget-conscious individuals and families.

Moreover, even “natural” toothpaste options may still contain questionable ingredients or rely on excessive packaging that contributes to environmental waste. For those seeking a truly eco-friendly and cost-effective solution, homemade tooth powder emerges as the clear winner.

Embracing the DIY Approach:

By crafting your tooth powder at home, you not only gain peace of mind knowing exactly what goes into your oral care products but also save money in the process. The ingredients required for homemade tooth powder are often readily available in bulk or at affordable prices, making them a sustainable and economical choice for conscientious consumers.

Furthermore, homemade tooth powder allows for customization to suit individual preferences and needs. Whether you prefer a stronger mint flavor or wish to incorporate additional herbal ingredients for added benefits, the possibilities are endless when you take control of your oral care regimen.

Conclusion:

In a world inundated with chemical-laden products and steep price tags, homemade tooth powder offers a refreshing alternative that prioritizes health, sustainability, and affordability. By steering clear of toxic ingredients found in conventional toothpaste and sidestepping the high costs of store-bought natural alternatives, DIY enthusiasts can embrace a safer, more economical approach to oral hygiene.

So, why settle for less when you can create your tooth powder at home with simple, natural ingredients? Join the movement towards a cleaner, greener future, one brush at a time, and revel in the satisfaction of a radiant smile that comes from nourishing your body and the planet simultaneously.

Apple Scrap Vinegar

Apple scrap vinegar is versatile and easy-to-make but also comes with a plethora of health benefits. Making your own apple scrap vinegar at home is a sustainable way to utilize kitchen scraps, reduce food waste, and enjoy a homemade product that’s free from artificial additives. In this guide, I will take you through the step-by-step process of making apple scrap vinegar, from selecting the right apples to the fermentation and bottling stages.

How to Make Apple Scrap Vinegar

Apple Scrap Vinegar Recipe
  1. Choosing the Right Apples:

The first step in making apple scrap vinegar is selecting the right apples. While you can use any variety, it’s essential to choose organic apples to avoid pesticides and chemicals that might interfere with the fermentation process. Additionally, try to mix sweet and tart apples for a well-balanced flavor profile. Aim for a mix of apple varieties to enhance the complexity of your vinegar.

  1. Collecting Apple Scraps:

Once you have your apples, it’s time to collect the apple scraps. Instead of throwing away peels, cores, and any leftover apple pieces, collect them in a clean, glass container. You can store the apple scraps in the freezer until you have enough collected just ensure you are freezing wide-mouthed jars only, or make a small batch of homemade apple scrap vinegar every time you have any apple scraps. Make sure to wash the apples thoroughly before peeling to remove any dirt or residues.

  1. Creating the Apple Scrap Vinegar Base:

To start the fermentation process, place your collected apple scraps in a large glass or ceramic container. You can use a wide-mouthed jar or a dedicated fermentation crock. Ensure that the container is clean and sanitized to prevent the growth of unwanted bacteria. If you are using a wide-mouthed jar you will need fermenting weights and fermenting lids as well, I have tried MANY fermenting lids and these remain my favorite.

  1. Adding Sweetener and Water:

To start the fermentation process, you’ll need to add a sweetener to feed the bacteria that will convert the sugars into alcohol, I always use organic cane sugar. For every cup of apple scraps, add about 1-2 tablespoons of sweetener. Fill the container with filtered water, making sure the apple scraps are fully submerged. Avoid using tap water that contains chlorine as this will mess with the fermentation process.

  1. Stirring and Covering:

Give the mixture a good stir to dissolve the sweetener and evenly distribute it among the apple scraps. Cover the container with a clean cloth (this is unnecessary if using the fermenting lids or fermentation crock) secured with a rubber band. This allows the mixture to breathe while keeping out dust and debris.

  1. Allowing the Fermentation Process:

Place the covered container in a dark place for the initial fermentation. The ideal temperature range is between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Check the mixture daily and stir it to help distribute the natural yeasts present on the apple skins. You’ll notice bubbles forming as the fermentation process begins. There might be a layer of white/grayish slime on the top of the mixture, this is kahm yeast and completely normal.

  1. Monitoring Fermentation:

Fermentation times can vary, but you can expect the initial fermentation to take about 2-4 weeks. As the apple scraps break down, the mixture will transition from sweet to alcoholic and finally to acidic. Taste the liquid periodically to gauge its acidity level. I personally ferment mine for about 2-3 months as I prefer a stronger acidity.

  1. Straining the Mixture:

Once the mixture reaches your desired level of acidity, it’s time to strain out the solids. Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to separate the liquid from the apple scraps. Discard the scraps or use them in compost. These will most likely be too acidic to feed to your chickens.

  1. Bottling and Storing:

After straining, it’s time to bottle your apple scrap vinegar. Use glass bottles or jars with airtight lids to store the vinegar. Make sure to leave some headspace to allow for any residual fermentation gases. Store the bottles in the refrigerator or a cool, dark pantry.

Uses for Apple Scrap Vinegar

Apple Scrap Vinegar

Congratulations! You’ve successfully crafted your own apple scrap vinegar. Now, it’s time to enjoy it in various applications. Here are some uses for your homemade apple scrap vinegar:

  • Salad Dressings: Create delicious and tangy salad dressings by combining apple scrap vinegar with olive oil, Dijon mustard, and herbs. It adds a refreshing zing to your greens.
  • Recipe Replacement: Substitute apple scrap vinegar for any other vinegar in recipes, such as in pickling, sauces, and marinades. Its unique flavor profile can enhance a variety of dishes. Please note, unless you test the acidity level this is not safe for canning.
  • Health Benefits: Some people use apple scrap vinegar as a home remedy, mixing a teaspoon with water to aid digestion or potentially soothe a sore throat.
  • Bath Soak for Kids: Add a splash of apple scrap vinegar to your child’s bathwater when they are unwell. Some believe it may help reduce fever and provide a soothing experience. *not medical advice
  • Bone Broth Enhancer: Boost the nutritional content of your bone broth by adding a splash of apple scrap vinegar. It may aid in extracting more collagen from the bones, contributing to the overall health benefits of your broth.

Making apple scrap vinegar at home is not only a rewarding and sustainable culinary endeavor but also a delightful way to explore the world of fermentation. By utilizing kitchen scraps that would typically end up in the compost or trash, you’ve created a flavorful and healthful product that can elevate your cooking to new heights. Experiment with different apple varieties and fermentation times to find the perfect balance for your taste buds.

Apple Scrap Vinegar vs. Apple Cider Vinegar

Fermented Apple Scrap Vinegar

Apple scrap vinegar and apple cider vinegar are distinct in their origins and production processes, leading to differences in taste and composition. Let’s explore the key distinctions between the two:

  1. Starting Ingredients:
    • Apple Scrap Vinegar: As the name suggests, apple scrap vinegar is made from leftover apple scraps, such as peels and cores. The fermentation process begins with these scraps, which are typically combined with a sweetener and water to initiate the conversion of sugars into alcohol and, eventually, into vinegar.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar: Traditional apple cider vinegar, on the other hand, is made from freshly pressed apple juice. The juice undergoes a two-step fermentation process – first into hard apple cider through the action of yeast, and then into vinegar with the help of acetic acid bacteria.
  2. Ingredients and Flavor Profile:
    • Apple Scrap Vinegar: The use of apple scraps in the production of apple scrap vinegar imparts a unique flavor profile. Depending on the apple varieties used and the fermentation process, the resulting vinegar may have a milder or more complex taste compared to conventional apple cider vinegar.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar tends to have a more consistent and well-established flavor due to the specific apple juice used. It typically has a tangy and robust taste with a characteristic apple undertone.
  3. Nutrient Composition:
    • Apple Scrap Vinegar: The nutrient composition of apple scrap vinegar may vary based on the types of apples used and the specific fermentation conditions. However, it generally retains some of the nutritional elements present in the apple scraps, such as vitamins and minerals.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar: Commercial apple cider vinegar often goes through a filtration and pasteurization process that may remove some of the original nutrients present in the apple juice. However, high-quality, unfiltered, and raw apple cider vinegar may retain more of these beneficial compounds.
  4. Homemade Varieties:
    • Apple Scrap Vinegar: Making apple scrap vinegar at home allows for creativity and experimentation. The use of different apple varieties and the potential inclusion of various sweeteners can result in a more artisanal and personalized product.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar: Commercially available apple cider vinegar is often produced on a larger scale and follows a standardized process. However, homemade apple cider vinegar can also offer unique flavors and variations depending on the apple juice used and the fermentation conditions.

In summary, while both apple scrap vinegar and apple cider vinegar share apple as a common ingredient, their production methods, flavor profiles, and potential benefits differ. Apple scrap vinegar, with its emphasis on repurposing kitchen scraps, offers a unique and sustainable twist on the more conventional apple cider vinegar. Homemade variations of both types allow for exploration and customization, providing a diverse range of options.

Let’s embark on this delightful journey and uncover the secrets behind these delectable biscuits!

The Benefits of Long-Fermented Sourdough

Overnight Sourdough Biscuits Without Baking Powder – The benefits of long-fermented sourdough.

Long-fermented sourdough, with its slow and patient rise, brings a multitude of benefits that extend beyond just flavor. The process of allowing the dough to ferment over an extended period, often referred to as bulk fermentation, contributes to the development of unique characteristics that set it apart from quick-rise alternatives. Let’s delve into the various benefits of long-fermented sourdough:

  1. Enhanced Flavor Profile: The most noticeable benefit of long fermentation is the depth and complexity it imparts to the flavor of the sourdough. The extended fermentation allows the natural enzymes in the flour to break down complex carbohydrates and proteins, creating a richer, more nuanced taste. The result is a tangy and well-developed flavor that distinguishes sourdough from other bread varieties.
  2. Improved Digestibility: Long fermentation is associated with increased digestibility. The breakdown of gluten and other components during the extended fermentation process can make the bread easier to digest for individuals who may be sensitive to gluten. This can be particularly beneficial for those with mild gluten intolerances.
  3. Nutrient Availability: The slow fermentation process enhances the availability of nutrients in the sourdough. The breakdown of phytic acid, an antinutrient found in grains, allows for better absorption of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc. This can contribute to the overall nutritional value of the bread.
  4. Lower Glycemic Index: Sourdough with a longer fermentation period often has a lower glycemic index compared to bread that undergoes quick fermentation. This means that it has a milder impact on blood sugar levels, making it a potentially favorable option for individuals concerned about managing blood sugar.
  5. Increased Prebiotics and Probiotics: Sourdough is a natural source of prebiotics, which are compounds that support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Additionally, the lactic acid bacteria produced during fermentation act as probiotics, promoting a healthy gut microbiome. A well-balanced gut microbiome is linked to various health benefits, including improved digestion and immune function.
  6. Extended Shelf Life: Sourdough with a longer fermentation period tends to have a longer shelf life. The acidity produced during fermentation acts as a natural preservative, helping to inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms. This can contribute to reduced food waste and the ability to enjoy the bread over a more extended period.
  7. Texture and Crumb Structure: The extended fermentation allows for better gluten development, resulting in a superior crumb structure and texture. The bread is often airier with a chewy and satisfying consistency, making it a delightful sensory experience.
  8. Artisanal Appeal: Long-fermented sourdough embodies the artistry of traditional breadmaking. The commitment to patience and the artisanal process adds a special touch to the final product, making it a source of pride for bakers and a unique culinary experience for consumers.

In conclusion, the benefits of long-fermented sourdough extend far beyond the time it takes for the dough to rise. From the rich flavor profile to the potential health advantages, incorporating long-fermentation into sourdough baking is a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of those who seek to create not just bread but a wholesome and satisfying culinary experience.

Should the dough appear too dry, introduce additional milk, one tablespoon at a time, until reaching the desired consistency. The dough should exhibit a slight stickiness, yet remain manageable.
  4. The Choreography of Cutting and Shaping: Roll out the dough to a thickness of approximately 1/2 inch using a rolling pin or your hands. Employ a round biscuit cutter to craft the biscuits, placing them onto a prepared baking sheet with about 1 inch of space between each. Optionally, add a sprinkle of your chosen toppings – be it cheese, herbs, garlic powder, or any other favorites. I like to roll my biscuits into crescent shapes because it is fun, but not necessary.
  5. The Serenade of Overnight Rest: Envelop the baking sheet with a clean kitchen towel or beeswax wrap and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for an extended period of 8-12 hours, or overnight. This prolonged fermentation not only enhances the digestibility of the grains but also imparts a nuanced depth of flavor to the biscuits.
  6. The Culmination: Bake and Revel in the Sensation: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the biscuits in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the tops achieve a glorious golden brown hue. Once ready, delicately remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm and relish the delightful combination of sourdough goodness and the chosen toppings.

How to Make Cast Iron Seasoning Oil

Cast iron cookware has been a staple in kitchens for centuries, known for its durability and excellent heat retention. To keep your cast iron pans in top-notch condition, proper seasoning is essential. While commercial seasoning oils are available, many enthusiasts prefer crafting their own DIY cast iron seasoning oil for a more personalized touch. In this guide, we’ll delve into the world of DIY cast iron seasoning oil, exploring the benefits of using a combination of 1/4 cup beeswax, 1/4 cup flaxseed oil, and 1/4 cup coconut oil.

The Power Trio: Beeswax, Flaxseed Oil, and Coconut Oil

  • Beeswax: Nature’s Sealant – Beeswax is a natural substance produced by bees, renowned for its waterproofing and sealing properties. In the context of cast iron seasoning, beeswax acts as a protective barrier against moisture, preventing rust and extending the life of your cookware. Its high melting point ensures a durable finish that can withstand the rigors of cooking at high temperatures.

  • Flaxseed Oil: Polymerization Magic – Flaxseed oil, derived from flaxseeds, is a popular choice for cast iron seasoning due to its ability to polymerize when exposed to heat. Polymerization creates a hard, protective layer on the surface of the cast iron, giving it a non-stick quality. The result is a slick and smooth cooking surface that improves with each use. Flaxseed oil is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, providing additional health benefits.

  • Coconut Oil: Heat Tolerant – Coconut oil contributes to the stability of the oil mixture. Its high smoke point ensures that the seasoning process occurs without producing harmful fumes. The coconut oil enhances the overall seasoning, creating a well-rounded combination that protects your cast iron.

Now that we understand the benefits of each ingredient, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of creating your own DIY cast iron seasoning oil:

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Preparation: Gather all the ingredients and ensure your cast iron cookware is clean and dry. A well-prepared surface allows the seasoning oil to adhere effectively.
  2. Melting the Beeswax: In a double boiler or a heat-resistant bowl placed over a pot of simmering water, melt the beeswax. Be patient, as beeswax has a higher melting point compared to other oils. Stir occasionally to ensure even melting.
  3. Combining the Oils: Once the beeswax is fully melted, add the flaxseed oil and coconut oil to the mix. Stir the ingredients together thoroughly, creating a homogeneous mixture. The combination of these oils brings a perfect balance of sealing, polymerizing, and flavor-enhancing properties.
  4. Cooling and Storage: Allow the mixture to cool but not solidify. Once it reaches a pourable consistency, carefully pour it into a container with a tight-sealing lid. Store the DIY cast iron seasoning oil in a cool, dark place when not in use.
  5. Application: When ready to season your cast iron, apply a thin, even layer of the oil mixture to the entire surface of the cookware. Ensure that the oil reaches all nooks and crannies. Bake the cast iron in an oven at a moderate temperature (around 375°F or 190°C) for an hour. This process allows the seasoning oil to bond with the cast iron, creating a durable and non-stick finish.

Benefits of DIY Cast Iron Seasoning Oil:

  1. Natural and Chemical-Free: Crafting your own seasoning oil allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring a chemical-free and natural solution for your cast iron cookware. This is especially appealing for those who prefer to avoid commercial products with unknown additives.
  2. Customization: DIY seasoning oil recipes are highly customizable. Experiment with different ratios of beeswax, flaxseed oil, and coconut oil to find the perfect blend that suits your preferences. You can also add herbs or spices for an extra layer of flavor.
  3. Cost-Effective: Making your own cast iron seasoning oil can be more cost-effective in the long run. Once you have the basic ingredients on hand, you can create multiple batches, providing a consistent supply for all your cast iron maintenance needs.
  4. Enhanced Performance: The combination of beeswax, flaxseed oil, and coconut oil creates a powerful synergy that enhances the performance of your cast iron. The result is a seasoned surface that not only prevents rust but also improves the non-stick properties of the cookware over time.

The No-Soap Rule: Preserving the Patina and Flavor

In the realm of cast iron care, a cardinal rule often emphasized by enthusiasts is the avoidance of using soap when cleaning cast iron cookware. While it may seem counterintuitive to some, refraining from soap has its merits, contributing to the longevity of your cast iron’s seasoning. Here’s why you should think twice before reaching for that bottle of dish soap:

  1. Preserving the Patina: Cast iron develops a natural patina over time—a seasoned layer that adds to its non-stick qualities. Soap, with its degreasing properties, can strip away this valuable patina, potentially undoing the hard work you’ve put into building up layers of seasoning. By avoiding soap, you allow the patina to flourish, creating a smoother surface that enhances the performance of your cookware.
  2. Maintaining Flavor Infusion: Cast iron has a unique ability to absorb and retain flavors from the foods cooked in it. This flavor infusion adds character to your dishes over time, creating a personalized touch to your culinary creations. Using soap can compromise this flavor-retaining quality by removing the subtle residues that contribute to the rich taste associated with well-seasoned cast iron.
  3. Preventing Detergent Residue: Even a trace amount of soap residue can negatively impact the taste of your food. Cast iron is porous, and soap particles can embed themselves in the microscopic pores of the surface. This residue may not be visible, but it can alter the flavors of your dishes and compromise the integrity of the seasoning.

Proper Cleaning Without Soap:

Cast Iron Seasoning Oil

While the no-soap rule stands, maintaining cleanliness is crucial. Here’s a simple and effective method for cleaning your cast iron without resorting to soap:

  1. Immediate Cleaning: After cooking, allow the cast iron to cool slightly, but not completely. Cleaning while the pan is still warm makes it easier to remove food residues.
  2. Use a Soft Brush or Sponge: Gently scrub the surface with a soft brush or sponge. Avoid abrasive pads or steel wool, as they can scratch the seasoned layer.
  3. Hot Water Rinse: Rinse the cast iron under hot water, using a gentle stream to wash away any remaining debris. The heat aids in loosening stuck-on particles.
  4. Dry Thoroughly: Towel-dry the cast iron immediately after rinsing. Ensuring it is completely dry prevents the formation of rust.
  5. Reapply Oil: Once dry, apply a thin layer of your DIY cast iron seasoning oil to the entire surface. This step helps in maintaining and building up the seasoning over time.

By following this soap-free cleaning method, you strike a balance between cleanliness and preserving the essential qualities of your cast iron. Remember, each cooking session adds to the seasoning, and the avoidance of soap plays a pivotal role in nurturing a well-seasoned and flavor-enhancing cast iron cookware.

DIY cast iron seasoning oil is a rewarding and practical venture for enthusiasts who appreciate the art of maintaining their cookware. The combination of beeswax, flaxseed oil, and coconut oil brings a trifecta of benefits, ensuring a well-protected and superbly seasoned cast iron surface. By following this guide, you not only contribute to the longevity of your cookware but also add a personal touch to your culinary endeavors. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your ingredients, and embark on the journey of crafting the perfect DIY cast iron seasoning oil for a lifetime of delicious meals.

Same-Day Sourdough Bread

Natural Sunburn Relief Cream

Same-Day Sourdough Bread

In the rich tapestry of baking traditions, sourdough stands out as an ancient art form, revered for its complexity of flavor, chewy texture, and the patience it demands. The time-honored methods of crafting sourdough often involve lengthy fermentation periods, making it a labor of love for many bakers. However, the demands of modern life sometimes necessitate a quicker route to that tangy, aromatic loaf. In this extensive guide, we will delve deep into the intricate world of same-day sourdough bread, exploring techniques and tips to create a delicious artisanal bread on a shortened timeline without compromising quality.

In this comprehensive guide, we will embark on a journey to demystify the process of crafting same-day sourdough bread, allowing you to enjoy the wholesome goodness of homemade sourdough without the extended waiting times. From understanding the basics of sourdough fermentation to mastering the art of quick fermentation, we’ll cover every aspect of the same-day sourdough baking process.

Understanding Sourdough Fermentation

Recently Fed Sourdough Starter

Before diving into the same-day sourdough bread adventure, it’s crucial to grasp the fundamentals of sourdough fermentation. At its core, sourdough relies on wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria to leaven the dough and develop its characteristic tangy flavor. The longer the fermentation, the more complex and nuanced the flavor becomes. This method is also used to ferment the grains which can typically be hard to digest when not fermented.

Traditional sourdough recipes often involve an overnight or even multi-day fermentation process, allowing the wild yeast and bacteria to work their magic. However, same-day sourdough bread employs a few clever techniques to expedite this process without sacrificing flavor or nutrients. Of course, the longer you ferment the dough the more nutrients you are adding into it, or the more anti-nutrients you’re taking out of it.

The Quick Fermentation Approach

The key to same-day sourdough lies in accelerating the fermentation process. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to achieve that:

  1. Active Starter: Feed your sourdough starter very early in the morning, ideally around 6-7am of the morning you are wishing to bake. Keep it in a warm place for at least 3 hours, I like to turn my oven light on and put the starter in there to stay warm. You could also feed it the day before if you remember but either way, ensure that your starter has been recently fed and is at its peak activity. A lively starter is essential for kick starting the fermentation process.
  2. Warmer Environment: Maintain a slightly warmer environment for your dough to foster quicker fermentation. This can be achieved by placing the dough in a slightly warmer room or using your oven light.
  3. Increased Starter Percentage: Adjust the ratio of sourdough starter to flour in your recipe. A higher percentage of starter introduces more active yeast and bacteria into the mix, expediting fermentation.
  4. Autolyse Technique: Allow the flour and water to hydrate and rest before incorporating the starter. This autolyse technique improves dough extensibility and jumpstarts enzymatic activity, contributing to faster fermentation.
  5. Fold and Stretch: Incorporate a series of gentle folds and stretches during the bulk fermentation phase. This helps redistribute yeast, strengthen gluten, and enhances overall dough structure.

Same-Day Sourdough Bread Recipe

Sourdough bread made in one day

Now, let’s explore a basic same-day sourdough recipe to put these principles into practice:

Ingredients:

  • 500g bread flour
  • 300g water
  • 100g active sourdough starter
  • 10g salt

Instructions:

  1. Begin: Mix flour, 250g of water (room temperature, not cold), and starter in a bowl. The dough might seem shaggy but it will rest and come together, trust me. Let it sit in a comfortable temperature for about 30 minutes.
  2. Incorporate Water and Salt: Pour the remaining water on to the dough along with the salt. Using your hand squeeze the water and salt into the dough to incorporate. Allow this to rest for another 15-30 minutes.
  3. Stretch + Fold: Once the dough has rested, Perform a series of 3 gentle stretch and folds every 15-20 minutes. This looks like: stretch + fold, wait 15 minutes, stretch + fold, wait 15 minutes, last stretch + fold.
  4. Bulk Fermentation: Allow the dough to rest in a warm place for 3-4 hours.
  5. Shape and Proof (1-2 hours): After the dough has risen, shape the dough into its final form and let it proof until visibly increased in size. If using a banneton basket, allow the dough to rise in the basket. If you don’t have a banneton basket, line a large bowl with parchment paper and place the dough in there. Either way, get a kitchen towel wet with warm water and squeeze out the excess. Use this warm/wet towel to cover your bowl during the rising process. This keeps the dough from forming a hard shell on the outside while it is fermenting.
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven with the dutch oven in it. While baking the same-day sourdough at 450°F (230°C) for 25 minutes in a cast iron dutch oven with the lid on, remove the lid, bake for another 20 minutes with the lid off, or until golden brown, add a small pan filled with water into the bottom rack of the oven. This steam will help make a softer bread once done baking.

Mastering the art of same-day sourdough bread requires a balance of science, technique, and a dash of intuition. By understanding the principles of sourdough fermentation and implementing specific strategies to expedite the process, you can enjoy the satisfaction of baking a delicious loaf in a fraction of the time.

A Guide to Homemade Laundry Detergent

In a world where inflation has taken a hold on many families and natural living has been brought to the forefront of their minds, people are turning to do-it-yourself solutions to reduce their spending and unload the toxic burden of modern inventions, like fancy smelling colorful laundry soap. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of making your own DIY laundry soap, focusing on a homemade laundry detergent recipe that is not only effective but also gentle on your clothes and your wallet.

The Rise of Homemade Laundry Detergent

Making liquid laundry soap

Embracing Sustainable Living

In recent years, more people are adopting a community-sufficient lifestyle, and creating your laundry detergent aligns perfectly with this movement. It allows you to take control of the ingredients, avoid harmful chemicals, and reduce plastic waste associated with commercial detergents.

The Benefits of Going DIY

Discover the numerous advantages of making your laundry soap, including cost savings, customization, and the satisfaction of knowing exactly what goes into the detergent you use.

  1. Washing Soda:
    • Pricing may vary, but for the purpose of this example, let’s assume the cost of washing soda is $0.50 per cup.
  2. Castile Soap:
    • The cost of unscented Castile soap bars can vary, but for this example, let’s assume it costs $4.00 per bar.
  3. Water:
    • We usually consider the cost of water as negligible for these types of calculations.

Now, let’s calculate the total cost:

  • Washing Soda: $0.50 (per cup)
  • Castile Soap: $4.00 (per bar)

Total Cost = Cost of Washing Soda + Cost of Castile Soap

Total Cost = $0.50 + $4.00

Total Cost = $4.50

Assuming you use a 5-gallon bucket of water for this recipe, let’s calculate the cost per gallon:

Cost per Gallon = Total Cost / Number of Gallons

Cost per Gallon = $4.50 / 5

Cost per Gallon = $0.90

Therefore, the estimated cost per gallon for the given recipe is $0.90. Keep in mind that actual costs may vary based on the prices of ingredients in your local area.

When comparing to a typical liquid laundry detergent found at the store, the cost is usually around $10/gallon or more depending on the brand.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

The castile soap will never fully melt, this is simply the nature of solid castile soap. You might notice your homemade laundry detergent gets gelatinous when it sits between uses, this is normal. Shake the jar/container you use to dispense the soap and the gelatin-like texture will mix in. This should not harm your washer, I have used this recipe for years and never had an issue.

DIY shower steamers offer a range of benefits beyond simply pleasing your sense of smell. The heat and steam from your shower help to release the fragrance into the air, creating a spa-like shower experience. Furthermore, inhaling the aromas can have various effects on your mood and well-being.

When it comes to the aromatherapy of your DIY shower steamers there are various options you can choose to use. I personally suggest, and prefer, to use dried herbs for many reasons. Essential oils can often times stain fiberglass showers (I learned this the hard way!). Although essential oils will provide more fragrance than dried herbs due to it being more concentrated, there are still many benefits to using the herb itself.

If you want to intensify the fragrance when using dried herbs, you can make a tea with water and the herb to use in place of plain water in this recipe.

Herbal Shower Steamers

If you are looking to relieve congestion during a cold with these DIY shower steamers, try using dried eucalyptus and peppermint in your recipe. These both contain strong scents that can help clear your nasal passage when used in combination with a hot shower.

If you are looking to relax at the end of a long day, try adding dried lavender and rose petals to your herbal shower steamers.

Homemade Shower Steamers with simple ingredients

You might not be concerned about essential oils staining your fiberglass shower, or maybe you don’t have a fiberglass shower at all. Either way, if you choose to use essential oils in your DIY shower steamers rather than herbs, here are some great tips.

Similar to using dried herbs, lavender essential oil is well-known for its calming properties and can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Adding a lavender shower steamer to your routine can be a wonderful way to unwind after a long day. On the other hand, if you’re looking for an energizing boost, consider using a combination of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils. These invigorating scents can help clear your sinuses and revive your senses.

The best thing about DIY shower steamers is that you have complete control over the ingredients and scents you use. You can experiment with different essential oil combinations and find the perfect blend that suits your preferences and needs. Furthermore, making your own shower steamers allows you to avoid any potentially harmful ingredients that may be present in store-bought alternatives.

Once you’ve mastered the basic shower steamer recipe, feel free to get creative! You can add flower petals or even natural coloring agents to your mixture for an extra touch of beauty and customization. Just be careful to choose ingredients that will safely dissolve in water and won’t pose a hazard in your shower.

With just a few simple ingredients and minimal prep time, DIY shower steamers are a quick and easy way to elevate your shower routine and experience the aromatherapy benefits of dried herbs or essential oils. Give it a try and see for yourself! Your shower will be transformed into a soothing oasis, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
